Professor Kewal Krishan Mittal : A Brief Introduction
Born at Barnala, Punjab on December 25, 1931, Dr. Kewal Krishan Mittal had a chequered academic career, starting with a gold medal in M.A. (Philosophy) at Delhi University in 1956. Having spent few years at various government colleges in Punjab, he came back to Delhi to pursue his Ph.D. at Delhi University. His work on Role of Materialism in Indian Thought brought laurels, which was published by Delhi University as an exceptional example. Dr. Mittal taught as a lecturer in the Dept of Philosophy in 1960 and joined Dept of Buddhist Studies in 1969 as an Associate Professor. He became Professor in 1983 and was Head of the Department thrice before retiring in 1996. Professor Mittal has a worldwide recognition having taught and guided research scholars for M.Phil and Ph.D. from over 20 countries. He was well acquainted with Religio-Philosophical Literature of Pali, Prakrit, Tibetan languages and Sanskrit. He presented papers on various aspects of Philosophy and Religions at numerous seminars and conferences. He published over 100 research papers in reputed national and international journals. His major books include: Materialism in Indian thought, Buddhist Art and Thought, Perspectives of the Philosophy of Devatma, A Tibetan eye-view of Indian Philosophy, Perspectives on Karma and Rebirth, Quest for Truth, Śūnyavāda, the Mādhyamika Thought, Vijñānavāda (Yogācāra) and its Tradition, Nationalism and Humanism, Buddhist Perspective on the Religions and Philosophy of Life in India.
Professor Mittal had academic visits to Bhutan, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Thailand, UK and USA – quite a few of them a number of times.
He was closely associated with Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh since 1944 till his passing away. He went to jail first in 1948 and then during emergency. He was associated with ABVP, Deendayal Research Institute, World Buddhist Cultural Foundation, Sewa Bharati and Bharat Vikas Parishad. He left for his heavenly abode on July 21, 2006.
